What You Need to Grow Muscadine Grapes

What You Need to Grow Muscadine Grapes

Muscadine grapes are the ideal addition to any garden in warmer climates. They are known for being incredibly easy to grow and can be used in several versatile ways. If you're thinking about growing muscadine grapes, this guide covers what you need to know to see if they are right for your homestead.

How to Grow Muscadine Grapes

Muscadine grapes require hot and humid weather to thrive. Muscadine vines are extremely temperamental when it comes to temperatures. If temperatures drop, you might not see a fruitful harvest.

When grown with the right care, you can enjoy the sweet aroma of late summer fruit for years with this hardy vine. You can grow muscadine grapes in your backyard or as a small scale agriculture operation if you have the ideal climate. Here's everything you need to know to grow muscadine vines successfully.

Prepare an Area to Grow Your Muscadine Grapes

Muscadine grapes require at least six to eight hours of sun daily. You want to plant them in an area with full sun and good drainage soil. They do not like soggy soil. You can put together a mix of soil and fertilizer on top of the soil to help your grapes grow.

 Build or Purchase a Trellis

Like all vining fruits, muscadine grapes require support. A trellis is essential to support and encourage the growth of the vines vertically. Choose or build a strong trellis that can support these long-lasting vines for as long as you want to grow grapes. You should set up the trellis before you plant the vines to avoid disturbing the root systems.

Plant Muscadine Grapes

Plant your muscadine grapes in the early spring and ensure you spread out at least one vine per 20 feet of trellis to enable them to fully spread out. Start by digging a hole twice as deep as the root system on the bare root vine and fan out the roots. Ensure the vine's roots are at least an inch below the soil line and fill the hole with 3/4 of the soil and water to settle the soil. They fill the remaining soil and water again.

Pruning Muscadine Grapes

Your vine's success depends on how you prune. You'll want to remove any dead branches and leaves during the winter or before the growing season. You can remove up to 90 percent of the previous year's growth.

Caring for Muscadine Grape Vines

Your muscadine grapes, although easy, require continuous care until they mature. These tips can help you ensure your muscadine grape vines thrive.  Read more thorough seasonal tips and care here.

  • Water the young vines regularly, especially during fruit production. Once they've matured, you won't have to water them as much as they are resistant to dry spells.
  • As they grow, you'll want to train the vine on the trellis. Continue to stretch the vine laterally on the trellis to prevent any branches from becoming overshaded.
  • Fertilize your muscadine grapes with a 10-10-10 application in the early spring and two more times throughout the growing season, if necessary.

Growing muscadine grapes are a great addition to any garden with the right climate. The grapes that are produced not only are versatile, but they also provide a rich source of antioxidants and health benefits. If you have the space on your homestead, growing muscadine grapes is a rewarding experience. It's easy to yield a high bounty of delicious and beneficial grapes to make juices, wines, and jams.
